Work Field Trip

In one of my previous posts, I said that I seldom eat fast food because I don't like them. Today, I had my 2nd fast food meal in this year with my client. The initial suggestion was KFC, and I prayed really hard that they decided to vote KFC out... but I guess I forget to include McDonald's into the prayer. :(

It was a quick lunch at McDonald's before we went for recce at KLIA and immigration depot. The McD was so crowded that even the tables that are set outdoor were occupied with lunch crowd. We went inside the restaurant and found the place crowded with school kids, happily enjoying crappy unhealthy lunch. Sigh.

Anyways, that's beside the point. We went to KLIA to recce the immigration area for migrants. It was still early that there were only a few groups of migrants sitting around waiting for the immigration counter to open. They have nothing to do, no place to go, and thus they were just sitting on the floor, waiting. After checking the location, we left to the immigration depot.

The depot is near to Sepang Circuit. All the migrant workers that arrive in Malaysia will be transfered to this depot where their agents will go there to pick them up to their respective working places. It is also a place where the immigration places the immigrants that Malaysia wants to send back to their countries.

When we arrived, the officers warned us that we were not allowed to take pictures. The moment we went inside, we saw the migrants peeping out from the top windows of their cells to watch us. We were probably the highlight of their day today, as they simply have nothing to do in the depot. We heard guys whistling and talking (teasing?) to us from their cells, we ignored them and moved on.

We went to the main office for a debriefing, where the officer handed us facemask and gloves. We have to wear that because we were allowed to go to their cells, because some of them have illness such as TB... wahhHHhh... we quickly put on the facemask and gloves even though this made us suffocating and sweating.

The cells do not have fan... it is not hard to understand why. The depot is not supposed to be a place that you should feel comfortable staying at --- you don't want the immigrants to hang out there for free accommodation and free meals.

It felt like going to the zoo and look at the animals. They were very quiet when we were discussing with the officer outside. They just looked at us, curious about what we were doing there. I feel bad for them. They came to this country with the hope to earn more money, to have a better life. But this is where they ended up. Some of them will be sent back to their own countries because they are illegal, some because their agents cheated their money and thus nobody shows up at the airport when they arrived. Their dreams remained a dream that will never come true.

When we left the depot, I suddenly remember my lunch at McD... McD might be the most delicious food that they crave for, but I condemn.

...... I guess all of us should cherish what we have, for it's a dream for some people to live our lives.
